Eduard Shevardnadze was born on January 25, 1928 in Lanchkhuti region, village Mamati, in the teacher’s family.

Education

In 1943-1946 he was an honor student at the nursing school.
In 1949-1951 – an excellent listener of the Communist Party Central Committee Party School
In 1960 he graduated from A. Tsulukidze State Pedagogical Institute in Kutaisi, historian and political analyst specializing in the faculty of History.

 

Career Path

Eduard  Shevadnadze was elected as Secretary of Komsomol Organization. In 1948, he became a member of Georgian Communist Party (GCP). Since that time, he worked on various partial positions and for Komsomol, such as: Instructor at the Department of Komsomol Agencies of the Central Committee of Georgian Communist Party;Second Secretary of Kutaisi Regional Committee of Georgian Communist Party, First Secretary of Kutaisi Regional Committee of Georgian Communist Party.
In 1957, he was elected as First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Georgian Communist Party; after, as First Secretary of Mtskheta District Committee of the Georgian Communist Party and then as First Secretary of Tbilisi First of May District Committee of the Georgian Communist Party.
In 1964-1965, Eduard Shevardnadze worked as the First Deputy to Minister of Public Order Protection of Georgia; after, was Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia until 1972 year; from 25 July, 1972, First Secretary of Tbilisi Party City Committee; from 29 September, 1972 until 6 July, 1985, was First Secretary of the Central Committee of Georgian Communist Party.
On 3 July, 1985, became appointed as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Union and was elected as the member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union; on 20 December, 1990, he declared about his resignation and headed Association of Foreign Policy until the March of 1992.
He was one of the founder and chairman of “Movement for Democratic Reforms”.
Shevardnadze returned to the position of Ministry of Foreign Affairs for one month on 20 November, 1991.
On 7 March, 1992, Eduard Shevardnadze returned to Georgia and headed the state council.
On 11 October, 1992, he was elected as the Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia. The Parliament elected him as the Head of the State and at the same time, he became the Head of the State’s Armed Forces.
On 28 November, 1993, Shevardnadze was elected as the Chairman of the Citizen’s Union of Georgia.
On 5 November, 1995, through the Parliamentary and Presidential elections he was elected as the President of Georgia,
He was reelected as the President for the second term on 9 April, 2000.
As a result of Rose Revolution, Shevardnadze resigned from the presidential post on 23 November, 2003.
 
 
Eduard Shevardnadze died at Krtsanisi Residence in Tbilisi, on 7 July, 2014. As he wished, he was buried at the Yard of Residence next to his wife.
The wife of the Eduard Shevardnadze, Nanuli Cagareishvili was honored journalist, the president of the society “Georgian Women for Peace and Life” in 1992-2004, honored president of international society “White Veil”. Has children: Manana Shevardnadze and Paata Shevardnadze.

Is Editor and Publisher of the book by GiviBerdzenishvili “Stalin” (Gori, 2007).

Awards

As the Socialist Labor Hero, Eduard Shevardnadze wasawarded at different times  with Golden Star, five Order of Lenin, Order of October Revolution, Order of Red Flag Labor, and with different medals.
On 25 January, 2003, the Catholicos-Patriarch Ilia II awarded Eduard Shevardnadze with Saint George first rank Order.
Shevardnadze was honored doctor and the member of academy at several foreign universities.
He was granted with different honored awards: on 26 February, 1992, “Funny Augustine” order in Vienna; on December, 1992, The Caring Institute, (USA) granted Shevardnadze with national award for the biggest contribution in the field of human rights and the biggest compassion for mankind.
In 1993, was granted with Hamburg Charity Society of Immanuel Kant (Germany) Prize for the special merit in the field of peace in Europe and for the improvement of cooperation with eastern and southern European countries.
 

In 1993, Institute for East West Security Studies granted Shevardnadze with the award for his merit in ending cold war and liberation of the country.


On 20 December, 1994, regarding the five year anniversary of Rumanian December Revolution was granted with diploma and medal.
On 2 July, 1997, according to the decision of the Board of Directors of the Onassis International Fund(Greece) for the international mutual understanding and social achievements was granted with Onassis Fund Prize.
On December, 1997, board of director of Nixon Center (USA, Washington) granted him with Nixon special prize for the National State Prosperity –for the merit regarding the implementation of peaceful revolution in the Soviet Union and for the excellent achievements for new and democratic Georgia.
On 14 January, 1998, Israel Democracy Institute granted Shevardnadze with special prize for
the special merit in development of Democratic Georgia and for the help to the Jewish people for returning to the homeland (Israel, Jerusalem).
On 12 February, 1998, the International Academy of Sciences, education, Industry and Arts of California awarded him with E. Einstein Big Golden Star for the special achievements and for the book “My Choice”.
On 9 July, 1998, East West Institute (USA) granted him with award for the title of “best European statesman”
On 30 June, 1998, Russian Cosmonautics Academy granted him certificate of the plenipotentiary ownership of one of the stars of the Great Bear Constellation.
On July, 1998, according to the decision of the Organizational Board ofInternational Olympic Committee, Shevardnadze was awarded with Olympic Golden Order for the biggest merit in the development of world sport and Olympic field.
On April, 1999, World International Environmental Defense Fund granted him withCertificate 2000 for the special merit in keeping “modern planet”.
On 22 April, 1999, he was granted with prize of company Enron for the Social Activity at the James Baker Social Institute of The Rais University.
On 5 May, 1999, President of Greece Republic Konstantinos Stephanopoulos granted him with Big Cross Order of the Savior.
On 24 May, 1999, as the successful politician, he was granted order of club “Rotar International” for the merit in international thinking, prosperity and peace development.
On July, 1999, National Democratic Institute (USA) granted him with the Democratic Prize of Averill Harriman for the merit in the field of democracy and human rights.
On 13 October, 1999, he was granted with the highest prize of the German Federal Republic – “Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany” –for the special merit of the unification of Germany while serving the Soviet Union as the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On 14 October, 1999, he was granted with prize of Ludwig Wiunshfor the special merit of implementation of understanding and tolerance among the people.
On 29 October, 1999, was granted with prize of Turkish Writers and Journalists Fund for the merit of peoples converges.
 

On 6 January, 2000, the Patriarch Diodoros of Jerusalem granted him with the order of “Holy Cross of Knights of Saint Tomb”.

 
On 6 January, 2000, during the meeting between Eduard Shevardnadze and Yasser Arafat, the Head of Palestinian Administration according to his special decision awarded Georgian President with Order “Bethlehem 2000”.

On 15 March, 2000, was granted with the First Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise for the strengthening of friendship among Ukrainian and Georgian People and for the development of cooperation between Ukraine and Georgia.



On 22 March, 2000, was granted with the Order of Independence of Istiglal for the merit of development of friendship between Georgia and Azerbaijan;
On 28 March, 2000, was granted with the Order of Saint Mesrop Mashtots for the merit of development of friendship between Georgia and Armenia.
On 14 April, 2000, the Central Administration of the American World War II Veterans and Disables Association awarded him with Memorial Medal “55 Anniversary of Victory of Allied Troops in the Second World War”


On 19 July, 2000, was granted with Saint Mikheil and Saint George Cross Order in Buckingham Palace. King the Elisabeth personally handed him the highest state award designated for foreigners and blessed him as knight.

On 15 September, 2000, General Director of Ionesco, Koïchiro Matsuura granted the President of Georgia with Medal of Confucius as one of the great thinker of the century.


On 30 September, 2000, International Marshal of Malta Knight Saint Ioane Jerusalem, Otoi Oklik granted the President of Georgia with highest prize “Big Cross” for the greatest merit for the human well-being, in particular, for the destroying of Berlin Wall and strengthening of peace in Europe
On 13 May, 2001, President of Fide (and the President of Kalmykia at the same time), Kirsan Lumjinov granted Eduard Shevardnadze with Fide’s Medal and Knight Order.
On 30-31 May, 2003, on the celebration event regarding the 300 years anniversary of Sankt-Petersburg, Eduard Shevardnadze was granted by Vladimer Putin with badge “Russian Emblem” and by the City Governor – Vladimer Iakovlev with Medal “Peterburg is 300 Years Old”.
On 17 June, 2011, the General Secretary of International Road Transport Union (IRU), Martin Marm granted Shevardnadze with award for the special merit of Silk Road Revival.
