The President of Georgia: "I Congratulate Granting Visa Free Travel to Georgian Citizens, Abkhaz, and Ossetian Compatriots, Who Will Benefit from This Decision"

The President of Georgia, H.E. Giorgi Margvelashvili has hosted the diplomatic corps accredited to Georgia at the Presidential Palace.
The President, together with the diplomatic corps, has observed the live broadcast of the European Parliament session, in which European Parliament has voted in favor of Georgia in visa liberalization process.
At the plenary session of the European Parliament 553 MP’s have voted in favor, while 66 against Georgia. 28 deputies have abstained from voting.
Following the session, the President has addressed the diplomatic corps and thanked the members of the European Parliament for their support.
“I would like to congratulate our citizens on this important achievement in the process of Georgia’s European integration. I would like to thank the members of the European Parliament for this significant decision. I also thank the Ambassadors to Georgia who have worked hard for this achievement.
I would like to thank executive and legislative branches of our current, as well as former Governments, for their efforts in this important achievement.
Considering the important contribution of Georgians, Georgian culture, and Georgian citizens in the European society and vice versa, the consequences of this decision will be celebrated by both, Georgian and European sides.
I would like to underscore that our Abkhaz and Ossetian citizens are also witnesses and beneficiaries of this decision”, - stated the President.
The Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia, Mr. Janos Herman has stressed the importance of today’s occasion and noted that Georgia is one step closer to the final decision.
“First let me say that I feel honored to be invited by the President of Georgia today, here at the Presidential Palace. This is an important occasion, because we are one important step closer to the final decision; this is still not the final decision, but now we are approaching really the last stages, and this is important, I understand, for people of Georgia and let me say that we congratulate Georgia on this important decision today, from our heart. We think that this step and later on the conclusion of the visa free procedure, will bring us even more closer together, and we are doing everything we can in order to continue the approximation of Georgia towards the European Union. This is one step, but a very-very important step and we know very well how hard many people worked for this to become reality”, - stated Mr. Herman.
According to the Ambassador of France to Georgia, Mr. Pascal Meunier, Georgian society truly deserved today’s decision.
“It is a great day for Georgia because it is a long expected vote in order to implement the visa liberalization. It is a great day for Europe because this shows that despite the difficulties, Europe is open to friendly nations like Georgia. I think it is a historic day as the European Parliament has voted for the visa liberalisation for Georgia”, - stated Mr. Meunier.
