President Margvelashvili Awards Posthumously Guram Gabeskiria Title of National Hero

The President of Georgia, H.E. Giorgi Margvelashvili has laid a wreath at the Memorial of heroes fallen in fight for Georgia’s unity and independence in Heroes Square, honored their memory and met with their family members.
President Margvelashvili has awarded posthumously the Mayor of Sokhumi, Colonel Guram Gabeskiria the title of National Hero for his extraordinary courage and heroism in defending Georgia’s unity and handed the Order to his family members.
"Today is a day of national mourning and tragedy. Sokhumi fell on September 27, 1993. Many heroes sacrificed lives for their homeland.
Today we highlight the merit of a person who, together with Zhiuli Shartava was besieged and shot dead by separatists on September 27. The person who has courageously faced death, who was ordered to kneel down before the enemy and his answer was “never!’.
Today we underline the contribution of Guram Gabeskiria and remember him with great pain that unites us all. Pride and celebration of his unyielding spirit unite us.
Today we award Gabeskiria the highest title – National Hero of our homeland and hand this award to his family members," President Margvelashvili said.
The President has visited the Memorial with the Head of his Administration Mr. Giorgi Abashishvili, Secretary of the National Security Council Mr. Davit Rakviashvili and advisors.
