President Zourabichvili to Hold Broad Consultations with Public to Elaborate Law on Defamation

Consultations with non-governmental organizations on the defamation law will be held at the Presidential Administration in the nearest future. Consultations will be held with active involvement of media.
The document developed as a result of these consultations should reflect Georgian reality and be based on absolute public consensus, according to Khatia Moistsrapishvili, Press Speaker of President Zourabichvili.
"The Presidential Administration personnel is already learning from the international expertise; however, this does not mean that we will copy any document, even the one of the country that has the best experience. This should be a Georgian document that will be based on absolute public consensus.
The President of Georgia has been repeatedly emphasizing that the freedom of speech in the country is inviolable and it should be protected unconditionally. At the same time, it is important to protect human dignity. Each and every citizen of Georgia should be protected from insult. They all should feel that the state protects them. This process will be the first step towards establishing peace in the society," Khatia Moistsrapishvili said, explaining that the consultations will focus on defamation and fake news spread in social networks.
