President Zourabichvili Welcomes Persons with Disabilities on Georgia’s Disability Day

President Salome Zourabichvili met with organizations working on the rights of women with disabilities to discuss promoting the rights of people with disabilities on Georgia’s Disability Day.
It was underlined that the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) pays a special accent on women. Participants of the Convention recognize that women with disabilities are under threat of various discrimination.
Today’s meeting with organizations working for women with disabilities is meant to be symbolic, to ensure a proportional protection of the rights of the disabled.
With the coordination of Simon Petridisi, Consultant to the President of Georgia on Persons with Disabilities, non-governmental organizations working for women with disabilities will continue to meet in different thematic groups and prepare recommendations that will be submitted for further revision to the relevant state agencies and the Government of Georgia.
“I am your supporter. You should come with your main priorities that I will further expand when necessary,” said President Zourabichvili.
The discussion touched upon the necessity to involve persons with disabilities in the decision-making process of the country. It was underlined that at this stage, the Presidential Administration, along with organizations working for persons with disabilities, is establishing an action plan to improve the rights of people with disabilities. Meetings held within thematic groups serve to expand this goal.
