President Zourabichvili: ‘Our Flag Is Symbol of Unity and History’

President Salome Zourabichvili marked the National Flag Day in the Chokhatauri Municipality, where a flag-raising ceremony was held at the Castle of the Eristavis in the village of Goraberezhouli.
The President congratulated the people of Georgia on National Flag Day, speaking about the importance of instituting the value of promoting the state symbol in the next generations.
“My fellow compatriots,
“I would like to congratulate all of you on National Flag Day, to congratulate you on this day from Guria, from one of the regions which first declared its independence. It is a symbolic act for Georgia for us to commemorate this special day from Guria.
“First and foremost, let me congratulate this special day to the representatives of our Defense forces. I want to congratulate our soldiers both inside the country and beyond its borders, who are representing Georgia in peacekeeping missions under the Georgian flag.
“Our flag is a symbol of state unity and of our history. That is why we have raised our flag this year at the Castle of the Eristavis of Guria, this historical place.
“I have insisted on celebrating this day in different regions of Georgia every year. The cross in the middle of our flag reflects the symbol of our unity.
“Everything that makes up Georgia is represented on the Flag, its Christianity, its past.
“It is one of the oldest national flags. Through it, we do not only join Europe, we already are in Europe.
“Fairness and courage are reflected in the symbols and colors of the flag. These are the values that Georgia is proud of.
“The flag is moreover a symbol of our unity, important during the grave situation underway in Abkhazia, which we are carefully following. It is of vital importance to maintain peace and security of each of our citizens there.
“Today, we do not have an instrument to protect our citizenry there. However, this flag is a hope for Georgia’s unification. Today, it is a flag for all of Georgia, and it will remain so in the future.
“Underneath this flag, many governmental works are underway.
“Our soldiers stand under this flag.
“This flag unites our diplomatic missions oversees. We are eminent, beyond our country’s borders, under this state flag.
“Our Georgian flag has been repeatedly raised through the victories of our Georgian athletes. I am confident that the Georgian flag will be numerously elevated during the 2020 Olympic Games.
“Let me tell to the kids and to our youth that respecting the state flag not only carries symbolic importance, but it also honors yourselves, your country, those values and principles through which this country came to this path.
“As I have underscored, this flag is a symbol of unity, and we will not deserve it if we fail to be unified as a society. Regaining the key symbolic values of this flag – Christianity, love, unity - is of vital importance.
“As we enter 2020, I would like to wish you all to deserve this flag, like the Georgians who created it and carried it up to today. Then, we will deserve the future represented by this flag for Georgia.
“Once again, I wish you all happiness and success on this Day of Kalanda. I wish peace to all of Georgia and to the world, peace as the common human principle, what our world needs,” said President Zourabichvili.
