The Statement of President Margvelashvili on the So-Called Elections and Referendum to Be Held in the So-Called South Ossetia

The-so called South Ossetian Presidential elections and a referendum on changing the ancient Georgian territory's name are held in the so-called South Ossetia.
This action is directed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia and roughly violates the basic principles of international law. It is impossible to discuss any form of the freedom of choice or the freedom of expression on the territory, from which the majority of population was displaced as a result of ethnic cleansing and where the control is exercised by the occupation force of the foreign country.
Conducting the so-called referendum is nothing but a transition of the creeping occupation regime into an obvious annexation, according to the same technique that the Russian Federation used with the Crimea in 2014. This is a pressure exerted on Georgia, which aims to further escalate the situation in the Black Sea and the South Caucasus regions.
I would like to address the international community, to take a stand against the Russian sphere of privileged interests and another effort to infringe upon its neighboring country’s sovereign borders and territorial integrity.
Establishing the “Crimea Precedent” in the practice of international relations will pose a threat not only to the national security of Georgia, but also to the efficiency of the universal and fundamental principles on which the current international order is based.
