President’s meeting with ethnic Georgians in Azerbaijan

Georgian president completed his first official visit to Azerbaijan by a tour to Kakhi Region, which is populated by ethnic Georgians. Giorgi Margvelashvili was welcomed with an emotional reception at the Kakhi Saint George’s Church by orthodox Georgians. They even performed Georgian songs in honor of the president. Giorgi Margvelashvili presented the church with the icon of Saint George.
In Kakhi, the president held meeting with the representatives of Georgian Diaspora and delivered a speech before them. He thanked them for maintaining Georgian traditions and for their great contribution to the development of the two nations.
“It was a very emotional meeting. When you arrive somewhere and meet your people, your culture, which make serious contribution to the development of the two friend countries, you feel your heart full of pride. You are happy that they also enrich the culture of another country. These people are the worthy citizens of Azerbaijan and strengthen this country. At the meeting President Alieyv said that these people strengthened Azerbaijan. We are proud of the Georgian community in Azerbaijan, just exactly we are proud of our citizens of Azerbaijani ethnicity,” president said.
After the meeting with Georgian Diaspora, President Margvelashvili visited local Georgian school, which was repaired by the government of Azerbaijan. The school was recently presented with Georgian text-books by the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Georgia.
In the history of independent Georgia, this was the first occasion when the Head of the State visited ethnic Georgians living in this region.
