President Zourabichvili Addressees WHO Director-General, UN Human Rights Commissioner, CoE Human Rights Commissioner over Medicine Prohibition in Tskhinvali Region

President Salome Zourabichvili addressed Tedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization, Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Dunja Mijatović, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, over the prohibition of Georgian-labeled medicines in the Tskhinvali region, briefing them on the grave humanitarian situation.
President Zourabichvili underlined in her letters that, in addition to the prohibition of Georgian-labeled medicines, the situation is deteriorating due to the closure of the so-called crossing point to Akhalgori, which aggravates the humanitarian situation. This has created a difficult situation for the local population living in the occupied territories, especially the elderly, those who suffer from chronic diseases, and those in need of medical treatment.
The President highlighted that by closing the so-called crossing point and by prohibiting the sale of the medicines, fundamental human rights are directly being obstructed, namely the right to healthcare, the right to life, and the right to movement.
The President called on the international organizations to draw their attention on the recent situation in Georgia’s occupied territories and to react by all possible means for the opening the crossing point.
