Director Irakli Shonia Introduces Presidential Address on Zviad Gamsakhurdia Birthday to Zugdidi

Mr. Irakli Shonia, director of the documentary film “The Way to Freedom” about the first President of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia, introduced the public address made by President Salome Zourabichvili on Zviad Gamsakhurdia’s 80th birthday during the film showing in Zugdidi.

“At first, let me welcome the 80th birthday of the first President of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia.
“I am saddened by the fact that I cannot celebrate this notable day with you in his hometown. The referendum assigned by President Gamsakhurdia on March 31, 1991 is his immense legacy toward his nation.

“Holding the referendum paved the way for our independence; the nation’s consensus set the ground for the state’s establishment. This fact is even more significant when we know that the will of the people was expressed equally by our citizens living in Abkhazia and in Samachablo. Indeed, it is a clear demonstration of unity that reinforces the legitimization of Georgia’s territorial integrity. Georgia will remain grateful for the first president for this great accomplishment.

“Today, I have the honor as the fifth President to express my gratitude and pay respect to his memory.
“I strongly believe that respect of the institute of the President of Georgia is a way to strengthen state stability. Therefore, the investigation of the murder of our first president is a matter of state dignity.
“Mingrelia has gone through huge challenges in the process of establishing our state. Indeed, Mingrelia is a clear evidence of what extent internal disputes can hinder the country’s development.
“You know even better the value of peace and public consent. Today, Georgia needs this value even more. And my main aim is to definitively achieve reconciliation and the country’s unification.”
