President Zourabichvili – Diaspora is Georgia’s Image and a Significant Foreign Policy Part

President Salome Zourabichvili held a meeting with representatives of the Georgian diaspora, following her meeting with Georgian students, and talked about the importance of her visits in the Baltic countries and the role of diaspora.

According to the President, her meetings with representatives of the diaspora in several countries during her visits are to reveal their problems and increasing their engagement in the country’s social and political life. President Zourabichvili noted that Georgians living in foreign countries are Georgia’s ambassadors abroad and represent Georgia’s image. Our country is discussed based on them and they play a significant role in Georgia’s foreign policy.

As President Salome Zourabichvili stated, there are new initiatives related to the diaspora. One of the initiatives is to gather necessary data on diaspora in Public Service Halls, which will give an opportunity for representatives of the diaspora that wish to return to their homeland to receive all relevant information with a one-window policy, such as how to run a business in Georgia, information about ongoing programs in agriculture, and economic potential of the regions. Based on this, people will be able to actively engage in Georgia’s social, economic and public life after returning back to Georgia.

President Zourabichvili also mentioned the necessity that the Georgian diaspora should be more informed on dual citizenship, on which she has worked through the term as MP and which was enacted after the new constitution.

At the meeting with the Georgian diaspora in Riga, Chairman of the Diaspora and Caucasus Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia Beka Odisharia also introduced Georgian the Government’s view on diaspora issues.
