Remarks by President Salome Zourabichvili Upon Signing the June 2020 Constitutional Amendments

Today is a historic day!
I have signed the constitutional amendments, a further step toward Georgia’s democratic path.

For this, I would like to thank the Parliament and all members of Parliament, whether they did or did not support the changes, while I am confident that everyone actually supports these amendments as a serious step toward our progress, for our democracy and stability, a serious step ahead of this October’s election.

I consider myself to be responsible, by our Constitution, but also morally, to do my best to ensure that we reach a stable Election Day. To this effect, I took a serious and difficult step, that of clemency.

I did not make this decision because it was part of some agreement I was not a party of. I made this decision to serve the stability of our country. A stability that has been strengthened today. It is therefore impossible not to mention the role of the facilitator ambassadors in this process and not to express gratitude toward them, as their engagement was focused on reinforcing this very stability.

We all understand that a difficult period is ahead of us. Our successes were shown during this pandemic but many more challenges will be along the way that will lead us to the elections. We will overcome all challenges together and I believe we will uphold peaceful, transparent and fair elections. I also believe that not even the pandemic will hamper our path toward this.
