President Zourabichvili: ‘Despite Today’s Crisis, We Must Remember the Referendum that Restored our Independence 29 Years Ago’

President Salome Zourabichvili commemorated the 29th anniversary of the referendum that led to the restoration of Georgia’s independence in 1991.
The President stated that, even though the current situation is severe and everyone worries about their fate, or that of their loved ones, we must never forget the referendum that led, 29 years ago, to the restoration of the Georgian nation as an independent state.
“It is incredible that at a time when people had lived through 70 years of Soviet prison, they remembered the values of freedom of unity and unanimously voted for independence.
“Today is also the birthday of the first President of Georgia, the man behind this incredible historical fact. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
“Let the Georgian people remember the power of unity, which will help us defeat and overcome any challenge in front of us,” President Zourabichvili wrote on her official Facebook page.
