Presidents of Georgia and Estonia Hold Joint Press Conference

President Salome Zourabichvili expressed her gratitude toward Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid for her very warm welcome, noting that the level, the warmth, the closeness of Georgian-Estonian relations are based on a common past.
“We are following the same path on the same future. I very much not only hope so, but I am convinced that we will get where you are now and we will be again in the same family.
“As you mentioned, we are going down that path with some additional difficulties, to say the least, and that is the occupation of our territories, the occupying line, the pressure and the aggression that we feel, all the provocations that we feel, almost every day,” said President Zourabichvili
President Zourabichvili stated that despite these difficulties on moving down that path, Georgia has managed over the past fifteen years to really move steadily, step after step, toward its goal to integrate the European Union and NATO.
“We have now, in our constitution, both ambitions inscribed, EU and NATO integration. And, all of that and our internal development, economic and democratic, has happened despite Russia’s occupation line. And if Russia’s intention was to prevent us, to block us down that road, it has not succeeded.
“It is our victory and their defeat, it is our common victory, because it is also the victory of all the countries that have supported us that are supporting us now. We are very thankful to you and all the countries that not only do not forget us but remind Russia every day of the fact that it’s violating its commitment and that it’s not respecting the international principles of international law,” stated the President.
President Zourabichvili underlined that Georgia is moving toward the EU and NATO. In both organizations, the door is open, which has been repeated in Tbilisi by the NATO Secretary-General and, recently, by the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.
“We see the perspective, we are moving to that perspective, and we know that we can, and if not open the final door, we are opening all the possible doors meanwhile.
“And there too, we are very much supported by the friends that we have within the European Union and your country is one of the most reliable friends. And that means everyday cooperation in all fields. We can count on the economy, on development cooperation, on cooperation in many specific fields, whether education, e-Government, in economy and tourism,” said President Zourabichvili.
President Zourabichvili stated that Georgia should physically come ever closer to the European Union, given that the Black Sea has to become once again a sea of connectivity, transport, and closeness between peoples, and a place where safety will be enhanced and cooperation will be deepened.
