President Zourabichvili Attends Reception for 30th Anniversary of Berlin Wall Fall

“These walls – the barbed wires, hate speech, intolerance – exist in Georgia and we cannot be united as a country until we destroy these walls.”

President Salome Zourabichvili attended as the honorary guest the reception dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. During her speech, she said:

“Today is a day for freedom. The old words of our national anthem, ‘Glory to long-cherished freedom, glory to liberty,’ are justified more than ever before.

“Today is a day of vital importance, not only for Germany and for the European Union, but for nations previously in the Eastern Bloc and Georgia.

“We must not forget that aspiration toward life and freedom always results in victory. No matter how long it might take, life and freedom will always win at the end.

“However, the new walls are still being today, in different forms.

“These walls – the barbed wires, hate speech, intolerance – exist in Georgia today and we cannot be a united country until we destroy these walls and managed to achieve what Germany did before us.

“Breaking down these walls relies on us.

“Germany is proof that the reunification of our occupied territories is possible.

“There may be obstacles, but a single nation and a united country is being built and when the time comes, we will be even happier than the youth on these photos,” said President Zourabichvili.

H.E. Hubert Knirsch, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Georgia, hosted the President at the reception. A film screening on the Berlin Wall was held at the reception.
